About the Speaker: Dr. Suzanne Harrison is a board-certified Family Physician who has been working on violence prevention and education most of her career. As an Associate Professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine, she is responsible for violence education in the medical student curriculum. Dr. Harrison performs medical examinations as part of asylum evaluations for the Center for the Advancement of Human Rights, and developed a free clinic for victims of sexual and physical violence at Refuge House, a local shelter in Tallahassee. She frequently provides continuing medical education for physicians and other healthcare providers on domestic violence and human trafficking. Dr. Harrison is the founding chair for the American Medical Women’s Association’s anti-trafficking committee, now called Physicians Against the Trafficking of Humans, and now serves as one of the physician co-chairs of this national effort to provide education to healthcare professionals and advocate for victims of human trafficking. Dr. Harrison was instrumental in the development of AMWA’s position paper entitled “Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls in the United States.” She is the President-Elect of the American Medical Women’s Association.

  • Describe ways in which healthcare providers come in contact with victims of human trafficking; 

  • Describe key indicators and other warning signs; 

  • Recognize general guidelines for the approach to a victim of human trafficking; 

  • Identify resources for both the patient and provider.
