About the Speaker: Dr. Vincent Hsu is the Hospital Epidemiologist and Executive Director for Infection Prevention at AdventHealth Orlando. He also serves as an Assistant Director for the AdventHealth Internal Medicine Residency Program with faculty appointments from the Colleges of Medicine at Florida State University and the University of Central Florida. A graduate from Loma Linda University School of Medicine, he completed his internal medicine residency at Legacy Health in Portland Oregon, infectious disease fellowship at the University of Southern California, and obtained a Master of Public Health at UCLA. He trained at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer studying outbreaks caused by respiratory and enteric viruses, and participating in investigations into the 2001 anthrax attacks and 2003 SARS epidemic. He obtained board certifications in Infectious Disease and Preventive Medicine, and has published in several peer-reviewed journals. Having previously served as the Director for Continuing Medical Education and with current involvement in training medical residents, Dr. Hsu has a passion for healthcare professional education. Specific areas of interest include methods to improve vaccination rates, prevention of hospital-acquired infections, preparedness for emerging infections, and strategies to improve patient safety.

Program Overview:

This one-hour webinar is part of the two-hour Florida Medical Board state mandated required CME on Prevention of Medical Errors.  As part of an effort to address medical error incidents, the Florida Legislature mandates that all healthcare professionals in Florida complete a two-hour course on the topic of prevention of medical errors. This continuing medical education course is designed to satisfy the requirements of the Florida law and provide family physicians with information regarding the root cause analysis process, error reduction and prevention, and patient safety.

Learning Objectives:  
After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

• Identify the most common quality-of-life violations and most common misdiagnosed conditions

• Discuss prevalent diagnostic and performance errors

• Explain the necessary elements of a root-cause analysis

• Review safety systems in healthcare organization

• Design risk management measures to prevent medical errors and increase patient safety
