Welcome to Florida's Tar Wars Team
You can make a difference in the health of your community by educating as many children as possible about the harmful effects of tobacco use and generating awareness about the deceiving nature of tobacco advertising.
By becoming a Florida Tar Wars volunteer presenter, you will become a role model in your community by helping to encourage children to celebrate, promote and enjoy tobacco-free lives. Not only is the process easy, but you will be contributing to the health and well being of the youth in your area. Simply use the following resources to get started.
- To obtain detailed information about the Tar Wars program and to educate yourself on smoking statistics, visit http://www.tarwars.org .
- Next, contact schools in your community about making the presentation. To help you in this process, use our introductory letter to make initial contact with teachers/schools. Send our program overview with the letter to provide a better description of the program and the Florida state poster winner. Also, if needed, there is a letter for school superintendents, principals and curriculum specialists.
- We strongly encourage student participation in the poster contest. Information about the contest can be found in our poster contest guidelines. Note that the submission deadline for posters is May 4, 2007. Entries submitted to the state must include a completed Poster Entry Form and Authorized Release Form.
- A one-page sheet introducing the program is available for your use within the community. You may find individuals or companies willing to provide art supplies or small gifts and prizes to be used for classroom or school poster winners. The more awareness about and support you can obtain for the program, the more effective you will be in communicating the anti-tobacco message to our youth.
- Finally, we ask that you complete and return a presentation form following each presentation you make. This will help us track the number of schools and students we are reaching in any given year. You can mail it to the FAFP office at 6720 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32303 or email it to amcclean@fafp.org .
If you agree with us that Tar Wars is a worthy project, please help us by becoming a volunteer presenter, encouraging the schools in your commun ity to get involved and/or supporting the program financially . Your endorsement of Tar Wars will do a great deal to promote the program and help us fight the epidemic of tobacco use among children.
We appreciate your commitment to children and to delivering the Tar Wars smoke-free message, and we hope you will join our team. If you need any assistance, contact Florida's Tar Wars coordinators, Dr. Saria Carter Saccocio at
