Week 6 of Capitol Update
Last week the Legislature completed its sixth week of the nine week legislative session and both the budget process and numerous policy issues meant jam-packed legislative committee agendas. The already fast pace of the legislative session intensified as legislators scrambled to move their proposals through the process. Some of the week's headlines provide a glimpse of just how many complex issues are being discussed: Pared back health department overhaul clears Senate panel; Pension bill stalls in Senate panel as unions sort out objections; Governor signs bill backing proposed state water quality rules; House to take up Brody claims bill but cap attorney's fees; Panel OKs bill to let parents decide school's fate; Cat Fund, Internet sales tax bills clear Senate panel, but are stalled in House; House panel OKs bill to increase governor's influence over judiciary. Over the next two weeks committee agendas will continue to be packed with bills prior to the House and Senate spending the remaining days of the legislative session in full floor debate.
