Birth control is NOT preventative health care. Everyday, physicians perform pap smears looking for cervical cancer, do breast exams looking for breast cancer and give immunizations to prevent influenza and pneumoniae. Writing a birth control pill to prevent ... A CHILD .... is NOT preventative health care. A Child is NOT a disease. Fertility and pregnancy are normal healthy states of the human woman. Birth control has real harms to women documented in my recent study "Why OCPS Should Not be Part of a Preventative Care Mandate -- Real Harms of OCPS" (Peck, R, Norris, C. Linacre Quarterly, Feb 2012). Increased cardiovascular risks, increased HPV transmission, increased cervical and breast cancer risks all make posing birth control as preventative care dishonest. The IARC declared estrogen and progesterone Class I carcinogens in 2005. Why would we want to promote any carcinogen as a preventative health measure???
