A message from Florida Surgeon General Ana Viamonte Ros, MD, MPH
Our hearts and prayers go out to the residents of Haiti and their friends/family. The people of Haiti are in desperate need, and the Florida Department of Health, working through our State Emergency Response Team stands ready to help. The US State Department Operations Center has set up the following number for Americans seeking information about US citizens in Haiti: 1-888-407-4747. Due to heavy volume, some callers may receive a recording. I know many DOH Employees want to know what we can do as health care professionals to help ease the pain and suffering of the Haitian nation. Many of you participated in response efforts during hurricane Katrina. You understand how important it is that our response is coordinated. Self-volunteering, arriving in-country to see what you can do to help, is not an effective way of providing your expertise, and can actually hamper relief efforts. Self-volunteering can also be very dangerous to you personally. At this time, there are no plans for deployment of any state teams. Many of us want to help but cannot volunteer. Yesterday Governor Christ recommended those of us who want to contribute to the relief effort consider “Neighbors to the Rescue” at www.FLADisasterRecoveryFund.org – or by calling 1-800-825-3786. The “Neighbors to the Rescue” through the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund is a Florida based fund that works with non-profit organizations to assist with long-term recovery and unmet needs. I understand accurate and clear information is vital at
this time, and I will continue to provide you with updates as they become available. Thank you for all you do everyday, and your willingness to help our neighbors when the need arises.
